Class 421/3 - 4 Cig (Phase 1)
Allocated to Brighton (BI) depot, some in store at Eastleigh depot. Numbers 1701-14/17/19-27/31/33-48/50-53/99. They have Mark 4 motor bogies instead of Mark 6 on the MBSOs. Fitted with electric parking brake.
Class 421/4 - 4 Cig (Phase 2)
Details as above, numbers are 1801-13/31-35/37/39-48/50-51/53-74/76-91. Allocated to Brighton (BI), Ramsgate (RE) and Fratton (FR) depots.
Class 421/5 - 'Greyhound' 4 Cig (Phase 2)
All allocated to Fratton (FR) Depot, Portsmouth. Numbers are 1301 to 1322. They work the Portsmouth to London Waterloo services with the 4-Bep Class 412 units. These Greyhound units are fitting with another set of field weakening to improve the maximum speed. This term comes from the Steam era - it was formerly applied to the London and South Western Railway's T9 4-4-0 express steam locomotives.
Class 421/9 - 4 cig (Phase 1)
Fitted with electric parking brake and ex-class 432 Mark 6 motor bogies. Numbers are 1901 to 1908, all allocated to Brighton (BI) depot and working on Connex South Central services.
